A Letter From The Founder
To all donors, future applicants, and scholars,
Motivated by my personal and difficult journey through the foster care system and the many hurdles I encountered while striving for higher education, I have established The James Family Continuing Education Foundation. Having triumphed over considerate adversity, I recognized the need to offer support and opportunities to foster children who aspire to pursue further education, whether through college, trade schools, or apprenticeships.
As a survivor of the foster care system, I have a clear and intimate understanding of the uphill battle faced by these young, deserving individuals. The constant upheaval, scarce resources, lack of mentorships, and unstable environment create significant barriers to academic success. Faced with multiple challenges, I was determined to break the cycle and do what I could to ensure that children who have experienced or are currently in foster care have a chance to pursue their dreams, irrespective of financial constraints. This foundation aims to bridge the gap by providing financial assistance, mentorship, school supplies and guidance to eligible students in foster care. Recognizing that education is not only a means of acquiring knowledge but also a transformative force that empowers and uplifts, I believe that every child deserves an equal opportunity to thrive academically and, consequently, in life.
The James Family Continuing Education Foundation's goal is to offer scholarships that help cover tuition, textbooks, and other educational expenses, thereby relieving some or all the financial burden faced by foster children.
I grew up in foster care my entire childhood. I worked multiple jobs starting at the age of 12, emancipated myself from the system at the age of 17, obtained an associate degree in business in my early 20's, married and raised four children, created and managed my own business(s), and finally realized my personal dream of earning a bachelor's degree in Contracts and Business Management at the age of 55. I am living proof that resilience, perseverance, and the ability to overcome challenges are attainable for anyone with aspirations of setting and achieving goals.
Through the efforts of our foundation, I aspire to inspire a generation of resilient individuals who, like me, refuse to let their circumstances define their future. By investing in them and their education and providing the necessary support, we aim to dismantle barriers, open doors, and create a brighter, more inclusive future for children in the foster care system.
With a grateful heart I say thank you,
Sheila (James) Mackey
